Free notification plugin for Apple Mail
Herald is a simple notification plug-in for Apple Mail.
Herald shows pop-up notifications whenever you receive new Mail, much the same way as Growl alerts. However, it also allows you to perform actions directly from within the notification window, including deleting messages, replying, viewing messages and marking them as read.
There isn't much more to it than that. You can customize the background color, text color, size, shadow, transparency, and position of the window and there's also a scrolling text view so you can read full messages without having to switch back to Mail.
The only problem you may have is when OS X is updated as Herald frequently suffers from problems every time Apple does so. However, the developers are usually very fast at issuing updates to fix it.
Herald is a simple plug for Mail which makes Growl-like notifications possible.

Great interface, simple operation, easy to customize.
I use Growl on my Mac and thought that I would like GrowlMail, but I didn't at all. It just opened a bunch of windows and cluttered up my desktop. So I tried Herald, and it's great. It just opens one window, but it's easy to flip though multiple messages. The toolbar is really well designed, allowing you to mark a message as read or go to the full msg, or directly to a reply in Mail.
Pros:
Simple, customizable, smooth
